Cabin guide · 2026

They are not the same cabin - but the gap is smaller than it used to be, the names are actively confusing, and the value math usually lands on one answer. Here is the honest comparison.

## Is Business Class the same as First Class?

No. Where both exist, First Class is the higher cabin: a larger private suite, caviar-and-vintage-Champagne dining, dedicated ground services - at roughly 2-3x the Business Class price. But many airlines sell no international First at all, making Business their top cabin, and US domestic 'First Class' is a recliner below international Business in comfort. Modern Business suites with closing doors deliver most of what First delivered a decade ago at a fraction of the price.

- First = bigger suite, finer dining, ~2-3x the price of Business
- Many airlines (Delta, United int’l) sell no First - Business is their top cabin
- US domestic "First Class" is a recliner, below long-haul Business
- US-Europe: Business $2,300-$3,200 via consolidator vs First $8,000+ published

## Side by side

### The seat

Business Class

Lie-flat seat or suite, usually 1-2-1 with direct aisle access; closing doors on newer products (Delta One Suite, Qsuite, BA Club Suite)

First Class

Larger, often enclosed suite (Etihad's A380 Residence even has a separate bedroom, though it no longer flies to the US); more floor space than any Business product

### Dining

Business Class

Multi-course restaurant-style meals, real glassware, good Champagne; dine-on-demand on many carriers

First Class

Caviar service, vintage Champagne (Dom Pérignon / Krug class), cooked-to-order dishes, unlimited à la carte

### Ground experience

Business Class

Business lounges; flagship lounges on top carriers (Polaris, Delta One Lounges, Qatar Al Mourjan)

First Class

Dedicated First lounges and terminals (Lufthansa First Class Terminal, Air France La Première), chauffeur transfers on several airlines

### Availability

Business Class

Sold on virtually every long-haul route by every full-service carrier

First Class

Shrinking: many airlines (Delta, United internationally, Qatar on most aircraft) sell no international First at all

### Typical price (round-trip, US-Europe)

Business Class

$4,200-$7,000 published; $2,300-$3,200 via consolidator contracts

First Class

$8,000-$15,000+ published; discounted contract fares exist but the gap to Business stays large

Why everyone is confused

## The naming traps

**"First Class" on a US domestic flight** is a wider recliner with a drink before takeoff - below long-haul Business Class in every way that matters. A JFK-LAX [Delta One](https://www.businessclasstravel.us/delta-one-review) seat (lie-flat) outclasses domestic First on any other route in the country.

**Branded Business products** \- Delta One, United Polaris, Qatar Qsuite, ANA "The Room" - are all Business Class, even when the suite has a door and feels like First. Several of them fly on airlines that sell no First cabin at all, which is exactly why the "is it First?" question keeps coming up.

**True international First** survives on a shrinking list of flagships: Emirates and Singapore (suites with doors - Emirates adds a shower on the A380), Lufthansa (First Class Terminal in Frankfurt), Air France La Première, British Airways First. If the airline you are pricing is not on a list like that, Business is its best seat.

## The value verdict

When each cabin actually wins

**Business Class wins** for almost everyone: the flat bed is the part that changes how you arrive, and through contracted consolidator fares it costs 30-60% below published - [$2,300-$3,200 round-trip US-Europe](https://www.businessclasstravel.us/how-much-is-business-class) in shoulder season.

**First Class earns its price** on ultra-long-haul (14h+) where the extra space and privacy compound, on true flagship products (Emirates A380, Singapore Suites, Lufthansa First), or for once-in-a-lifetime trips. [Discounted First Class fares](https://www.businessclasstravel.us/cheap-first-class-flights) exist through the same contract channels - the gap to Business narrows, but never closes. For true First Class specifically, our sister desk [FirstClassTravel.us](https://www.firstclasstravel.us/) works those cabins exclusively - negotiated First fares on Emirates, Singapore, Lufthansa and the other flagship carriers, quoted by a human advisor.

## Business vs First, answered

### Is business class the same as first class?

No. First Class is the higher cabin where it exists: a larger enclosed suite, finer dining (caviar, vintage Champagne), and dedicated ground services, at roughly double to triple the Business Class price. The confusion is real, though - many airlines no longer sell international First at all, so on those carriers Business Class (lie-flat suites) is the top cabin, and on US domestic flights "First Class" is just a recliner that is below international Business in comfort.

### What is the difference between business class and first class?

Four things: space (First suites are private rooms; Business is a lie-flat seat or small suite), dining (First adds caviar-and-vintage-Champagne service), ground experience (First gets dedicated lounges or terminals and sometimes chauffeurs), and price (First typically costs 2-3x Business on the same route). On flat-bed comfort alone the gap has narrowed dramatically - modern Business suites with doors deliver most of what First delivered a decade ago.

### Is business class better than first class?

On value, usually yes. Both cabins give you a flat bed, priority handling, and lounge access; First adds space and ceremony at 2-3x the price. Most travelers who compare a modern Business suite (Qsuite, Delta One Suite, ANA The Room) against First conclude the extra thousands buy diminishing returns - unless the flight is 14+ hours, the airline is one of the true First flagships (Emirates, Singapore, Lufthansa), or someone else is paying.

### What is business class on a plane?

Business Class is the premium long-haul cabin between premium economy and First Class: a seat that converts to a fully flat bed (usually with direct aisle access), multi-course dining, checked-bag allowance, priority check-in/security/boarding, and airport lounge access. On airlines with no First Class, Business is the top cabin. Published US-Europe Business fares run $4,200-$7,000 round-trip; consolidator contract fares for the same seats run $2,300-$3,200.

### Why is Delta One not called First Class?

Delta One is Delta’s Business Class brand - and it is Delta’s best cabin, because Delta sells no international First Class. Meanwhile Delta’s domestic "First Class" is a recliner seat that is far below Delta One in comfort. Naming like this is why the business-vs-first comparison confuses people: the label on the fare matters less than the actual product on the aircraft.

### Is business class worth it over premium economy?

On overnight long-haul, usually yes: premium economy is a better recliner, Business is a flat bed - the difference between arriving rested or not. The price gap narrows sharply through consolidator fares: contracted Business at 30-60% below published often lands within a few hundred dollars of peak-season premium economy on the same route.

### Can you get discounted first class fares the way you can business class?

Yes, on the routes where First still exists. Consolidator contracts cover First on carriers like Emirates, Lufthansa, and British Airways, typically 20-40% below published. The catch is inventory: First cabins are small (4-14 seats), so contracted availability is thinner than in Business. A written quote request covering both cabins costs nothing and shows the real gap on your dates.

## Fare information & legal notice

At Business Class Travel, all fares are transparently displayed in USD and include all taxes, fees, and surcharges. Quoted prices are 'from' rates per person, typically for weekday (Monday-Thursday) Business Class travel originating in the USA, with the final price varying based on your chosen cabin, departure city, airline, and route. Generally, the lowest transatlantic fares depart from the East Coast, transpacific from the West Coast, and Latin American routes from Florida. To offer you unique value, some partner airline or itinerary details may remain confidential online until the time of booking, allowing us to secure savings of up to 60% off full unrestricted fares from major airlines, though actual savings vary by specific fare rules. Please note that some airlines may charge extra for baggage, and all our special fares are subject to seat availability, which is limited and may not be available on all flights or dates. We are pleased that many of our partner airlines currently offer flexible booking policies, including free exchanges and/or cancellations; typically, cancellations result in an airline travel credit (less any airline fees) valid per the airline's policy, while exchanges may incur a fare difference. Fares and their governing rules are subject to change without prior notice, and other restrictions may apply. The Business Class Travel team is always here to assist with any questions.
