Iberia Business Class review

Iberia A330 and A350 Business with 1-2-1 lie-flat, Madrid hub strength for South America and Africa connections, and Oneworld access via American AAdvantage and BA Avios.

The 60-second verdict

  • Madrid as a Latin America bridge. Iberia operates the most Madrid-Latin America Business Class flights of any carrier (daily to Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Lima, Bogota, Mexico City, plus most major capitals). US-MAD-South America is often the cheapest one-stop Business routing.
  • Solid 1-2-1 lie-flat Business cabin. Iberia's A330 + A350 Business cabin is reverse-herringbone with direct aisle access for every seat. Bed length 78 inches, width 22 inches. Aircraft are recent (A350 deliveries from 2022). Consistent product across fleet.
  • Avios value via Iberia Plus. Iberia Plus Avios are the same currency as British Airways Avios (1:1 transferable). Iberia Plus often has lower mileage cost than BA for the same redemption: 50,000 Avios one-way US-MAD Business with about $250 in fees. Best transferable currency: Amex Membership Rewards 1:1.
  • !Less polish than BA or Air France. Iberia cabin food and service are good but a notch below British Airways or Air France's recent updates. The dining is Spanish-influenced (tapas-style appetizers, paella mains on some routes) which is a feature for some travelers, more variable for others. Service style is friendly but less precise than BA or Lufthansa.

The Business cabin (A330 + A350)

Iberia operates Business Class on A330-200, A330-300, and A350-900 aircraft. All are 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone lie-flat, with direct aisle access for every Business seat. Bed length 78 inches, width 22 inches at the bed. Storage is reasonable; the side console fits a laptop, headphones, and personal items.

The A350 cabin (delivered 2022 onward) is the most recent and slightly more spacious. The A330 cabin was refurbished 2020-2022 and is now identical in seat product. Either aircraft is reliably premium; verify on the quote but the difference is minimal.

Design language is conservative Spanish modern: neutral colors, leather + wood accents, simple console layout. Less theatrical than Air France but more cohesive than Swiss or Iberia's pre-refit cabin. The Spanish brand has clear identity in colors and finishings.

Madrid hub and Latin America bridge

Madrid (MAD) is Iberia's sole hub and the most-developed Spain-Latin America Business Class hub in Europe. From Madrid, Iberia operates daily Business Class to Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Bogota, Mexico City, Havana, Quito, Caracas, plus broader Latin American capitals. For US-Latin America Business Class connections, US-MAD-South America is often the cheapest one-stop routing and provides a half-day Madrid layover option for travelers who want it.

Onward to Africa, Iberia operates Madrid-Cairo, Madrid-Casablanca, Madrid-Marrakech, Madrid-Tel Aviv, plus West African capitals. Limited Asian network (Madrid-Tokyo via codeshare, Madrid-Beijing via codeshare).

Avios currency: Iberia Plus vs BA Executive Club

Iberia Plus Avios and British Airways Executive Club Avios are the same currency, transferable 1:1 between the two programs (with a 90-day account-active rule). For US-Madrid Business redemptions, Iberia Plus charges 50,000 Avios one-way with about $250 in fees. BA Executive Club charges 50,000 Avios one-way but with higher YQ fees (around $700 because of BA-style surcharge passing).

For Iberia metal awards specifically, Iberia Plus is the better redemption. For BA metal awards, BA Executive Club is necessary. The Avios sharing means you can build a balance in one program and shift to the other based on the specific award.

Transferable currencies: Amex Membership Rewards 1:1 to both Iberia Plus and British Airways. Chase Ultimate Rewards 1:1 to BA only. Citi ThankYou Points transfer to Iberia Plus 1:1. Capital One transfers to both 1:1.

Madrid-Barajas T4S premium experience

Iberia operates from Madrid-Barajas Terminal 4 Satellite (T4S), a separate satellite terminal accessed by an underground train from the main T4. The Iberia Premium Lounge at T4S is competent but compact: hot food buffet, espresso bar, decent wine selection, shower facilities. Less impressive than Air France's CDG lounge or BA's Heathrow T5 Galleries First, but adequate.

For travelers connecting US-MAD-South America, the layover at T4S is comfortable. Onward gates are within 5-10 minute walks. Connection time at MAD is typically 1.5-2.5 hours; reliable.

Frequently asked

How much does Iberia Business Class cost from the US?

Published Business Class US-MAD typically runs $4,400 - $5,800 round-trip in shoulder season. Through a contracted consolidator, JFK / BOS / ORD-MAD Business round-trip is regularly $2,300 - $2,900 in shoulder season. Iberia is often the cheapest Oneworld Business option to Europe from the US East Coast.

Is Iberia Business Class as good as British Airways Club Suite?

Not quite. BA Club Suite has closing doors and is the newer cabin (rolled out 2019-2024). Iberia Business is 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone (refurbished 2020-2022 on the A330; A350 delivered new). Both are direct-aisle-access lie-flat Business. The visual and privacy differences favor BA; the price and Latin America network favor Iberia.

How do I use Avios for Iberia Business Class?

Iberia Plus charges 50,000 Avios one-way US-MAD Business with about $250 in fees. Transfer from Amex Membership Rewards (1:1), Citi ThankYou (1:1), or Capital One (1:1). Or transfer BA Executive Club Avios into Iberia Plus 1:1 (90-day active-account rule). Iberia Plus is the better program for Iberia awards because of lower YQ surcharges than BA EC.

Should I fly Iberia for a trip to Buenos Aires or Sao Paulo?

Iberia via Madrid is one of the best US-South America Business Class routings, especially for travelers wanting a stopover in Madrid. JFK-MAD-EZE is typically $3,200-$3,800 round-trip through a consolidator, often $300-$500 below direct US-EZE service. Plus you can break the trip with 2-3 days in Madrid (Iberia's Stopover program is free for transit passengers).

What is Iberia's stopover program?

Iberia Stopover allows transit passengers from the US (or anywhere) to Latin America via Madrid to add a free Madrid stopover of 1 to 6 nights at no extra fare. The program includes hotel discounts, free city tours, and free public transit cards. Useful for stretching a US-South America trip into a multi-country itinerary at no incremental Business Class fare. Comparable to the Turkish Stopover in Istanbul and Singapore Stopover programs.

Does Iberia have a First Class cabin?

No. Iberia operates only Business and Economy on its long-haul fleet. For First Class on Madrid routes, you would book a Oneworld partner: Iberia's codeshare with British Airways for BA First (LHR-MAD short hop available), or American Flagship Suites US-MAD (operated by American as a codeshare). For Madrid downstream to Latin America, no First Class exists on any carrier.
