Etihad Business Class review

Etihad Business Studio on the A380 and 787, Abu Dhabi hub, and the Etihad Apartments First product. Honest assessment of where Etihad slots between Emirates and Qatar.

The 60-second verdict

  • Solid 1-2-1 lie-flat Business Studio. The Business Studio cabin (A380 and 787) is comfortable: lie-flat with direct aisle access, decent recline, mid-sized bed, 22 inches wide. Not at Qsuite or Emirates A380 level but reliably premium.
  • Abu Dhabi pre-clearance to US. AUH has US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance, the only Middle East airport with it. On return trips, you arrive in the US as a domestic flight, skipping immigration at JFK or IAD.
  • Onward Indian Subcontinent network. Etihad Equity Alliance partnership with India's Vistara (now Air India) plus direct Etihad service to Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad. Strong US-India routing via AUH.
  • !Less brand recognition than Emirates or Qatar. Etihad doesn't carry the marketing weight or absolute hard-product top-tier of its Gulf neighbors. Service is good but slightly more procedural; cabin design is conservative. Etihad Apartments First (A380) is exceptional but only available on Apartments-configured A380s.

The Business Studio cabin

Etihad Business Studio (A380 upper deck, 787-9, A350) is a 1-2-1 lie-flat product with direct aisle access. The seat reclines to a fully flat bed approximately 6 feet 1 inch long, 22 inches wide. Bedding is high-quality (Christofle amenity kit, Heinkel turn-down). Storage is reasonable but not generous; the side console fits a small laptop and a few items.

The cabin design is conservative compared to Emirates A380 (gold + burl wood theatrical) or Qatar Qsuite (closing-door private suite). Etihad uses muted greens and beiges; the effect is calming but not aspirational. For travelers who prioritize sleep and a quiet cabin over visual drama, the Business Studio reads as appropriately premium.

The 787-9 Business Studio is the most-recently-refreshed cabin and slightly tighter (the 787 fuselage is narrower than the A380). The A380 upper deck is the most spacious Business Studio configuration.

Etihad Apartments First (A380 only)

On Etihad's A380 Apartments-configured aircraft, the First Class cabin is the Apartments product: a private mini-suite with a closing door, separate lounge chair, separate bed (not a converted seat), private wash room access. Bed length is 80 inches, width 26 inches. The bath is a separate cabin with shower (similar to Emirates First A380).

This product is exceptional and competes directly with Singapore Suites and Emirates First. Cash prices are around $13,000-$16,000 round-trip US-AUH. Etihad Guest miles redemptions are 130,000 miles one-way + ~$700 in fees.

Note: only the A380-configured Apartments aircraft has this product. Most Etihad routes operate on 787-9 or A350, which have Business Studio but no First Class. Confirm aircraft before pricing First.

Abu Dhabi pre-clearance: the unique edge

Abu Dhabi has US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance, the only Middle East airport with the facility (and one of only a handful globally, alongside Dublin, Shannon, Aruba, Bermuda, and major Canadian airports). On return trips, US-bound Etihad passengers clear US Customs at AUH before boarding, then arrive at JFK or IAD as a domestic flight.

In practice, this saves 30-90 minutes at the US arrival airport (no immigration line, baggage flows through as domestic). For travelers connecting onward to other US cities, it's a meaningful convenience advantage over Emirates Dubai or Qatar Doha.

Network and connections

Etihad operates 2 direct US flights: JFK to Abu Dhabi (daily) and Washington Dulles to Abu Dhabi (daily). LAX and Chicago service was reduced post-2020 and has not returned consistently. For West Coast travelers, Etihad requires a one-stop connection via Frankfurt or London.

Onward from Abu Dhabi, Etihad operates strong Business Class service to Mumbai (multiple daily), Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, plus Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, Manila, Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane), and most of the African coast. The Abu Dhabi-India hub is the network strength.

Frequently asked

How much does Etihad Business Class cost from the US?

Published Business Class JFK-AUH typically runs $5,400 - $7,200 round-trip in shoulder season, $7,800 - $9,400 peak. Through a contracted consolidator, JFK-AUH Business round-trip is regularly $3,100 - $3,800 in shoulder season. Onward connections to India or Asia are typically priced reasonably as add-ons (about $700-$1,200 above the hub fare).

Is Etihad Business Class better than Emirates or Qatar?

Not quite. Qatar Qsuite has the best Business hard product among the three (closing-door suite, unique Qsuite-Quad and Double options). Emirates A380 Business has the unique Onboard Lounge and broader US direct coverage. Etihad Business Studio is comparable but conservative in design and has only 2 US direct routes (JFK, IAD). Etihad does win on the AUH US pre-clearance facility, which is genuinely useful for return-trip arrival convenience.

What is the Etihad Apartments First Class product?

Etihad Apartments is the First Class cabin on Etihad's A380 aircraft (only). A private mini-suite with closing door, separate lounge chair, separate bed (80 inches by 26 inches), and shower access. Comparable to Singapore Suites and Emirates First. Cash prices are $13,000-$16,000 round-trip US-AUH; Etihad Guest miles redemption is 130,000 miles one-way. Only available on Apartments-configured A380s; verify aircraft.

Does Etihad have pre-clearance at Abu Dhabi for US arrivals?

Yes. Abu Dhabi has US Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance, one of only a few non-US airports with the facility. On return flights, US passengers clear US Customs before boarding the AUH-US flight, then arrive at JFK or IAD as a domestic flight (no immigration line, no baggage hall claim). Saves 30-90 minutes at the US arrival airport.

Can I use Etihad Guest miles for Business Class?

Yes. Etihad Guest charges 76,000 miles one-way for US-AUH Business with low fees. Transferable from Amex Membership Rewards (1:1), Capital One (2:1.5), and Marriott Bonvoy. Also bookable via American AAdvantage as a partner award at 70,000 miles one-way. Etihad Apartments First runs 130,000 miles one-way via Etihad Guest.

Should I fly Etihad if I am going to India?

Yes, Etihad is one of the best Business Class options for US-India routings. Strong Abu Dhabi-India network (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi with multiple daily Business Class flights), competitive consolidator pricing (typically $3,400-$3,900 JFK-BOM round-trip), and the AUH pre-clearance facility makes the return trip much smoother. Direct competitor: Emirates via Dubai, which has more US gateways but no AUH-style pre-clearance.
