Avianca Business Class review

Avianca's two Business products: lie-flat INSIGNIA on the Boeing 787 and Business Class Americas on the A320 family, the US flights where each one flies, the new suites with doors from 2027, and LifeMiles.

The 60-second verdict

  • ✓A proper lie-flat seat on the 787. INSIGNIA on the Boeing 787 is a 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone seat with direct aisle access for all 20 Business passengers, flown on Bogota-New York JFK since August 2026 and on selected Miami flights.
  • ✓Business on every route. Avianca restored Business Class across its network by early 2026, and the fare includes two checked bags of up to 32 kg each.
  • ✓LifeMiles is easy to earn. LifeMiles takes transfers from Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt, and as a Star Alliance member Avianca is bookable with United and Aeroplan miles too.
  • !Most US flights are narrow-body. On A320-family flights, Business Class Americas is the first rows with the middle seat blocked: more space and recline, but no bed. Fine for a four-hour daytime flight, less so overnight.
  • !Doors arrive in 2027. Avianca has announced new INSIGNIA suites with sliding doors for its 787 fleet, with installation starting in 2027. Until then, the 787 seat has no door.

INSIGNIA on the Boeing 787

Avianca's 787s carry 20 INSIGNIA Business seats in a 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone layout, each converting to a flat bed with direct aisle access. INSIGNIA is Avianca's premium long-haul brand, used on 787 flights to Europe and, since August 4, 2026, on Bogota-New York JFK, with chef-designed menus and a dedicated check-in at Bogota.

In September 2026 Avianca announced new INSIGNIA suites with sliding doors, 4K screens and Bluetooth audio for its 787 fleet, with installation starting in 2027.

Business Class Americas on the A320 family

Most Avianca flights to the US use A320-family aircraft. Business Class Americas occupies the first rows, with the middle seat blocked by a table, extra legroom and recline, meals and two 32 kg checked bags. It is not lie-flat; for an overnight flight, aim for a 787 departure where one is available.

US network

From Bogota, Avianca flies to Miami up to four times a day, New York JFK three times a day, Washington Dulles, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Boston, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth and Tampa. It also serves the US from Medellin and San Salvador, for about 14 US cities in all. Lie-flat 787 service is limited to selected JFK and Miami flights, so we confirm the aircraft on every quote.

Lounges in Bogota

Avianca opened its Diamond International VIP Lounge at Bogota in 2026 for LifeMiles Diamond members and eligible premium-cabin passengers on international flights. Star Alliance Gold members without a premium ticket use the Avianca VIP Lounge near gate 32.

LifeMiles

LifeMiles, Avianca's program, takes transfers from Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One, Citi ThankYou, Bilt and Marriott Bonvoy. Its Star Alliance award prices rose again in April 2026, so compare against a contracted cash fare before transferring points.

Frequently asked

How much does Avianca Business Class cost from the US?

Through a consolidator, Miami-Bogota Business round-trip typically runs $2,400-$3,400 on Avianca or American. New York and other gateways are quoted per date, and lie-flat 787 departures can price differently from A320 flights on the same route.

Is Avianca Business Class lie-flat?

Only on the Boeing 787, branded INSIGNIA, which flies Bogota-New York JFK and selected Miami flights. Business Class Americas on the A320 family is a wider seat with the middle blocked, not a bed.

Which US cities does Avianca fly to?

From Bogota: Miami, New York JFK, Washington Dulles, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Boston, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth and Tampa. Avianca also flies to the US from Medellin and San Salvador, for about 14 US cities in total.

Does Avianca Business Class have a door?

Not yet. The current 787 INSIGNIA seat has no door. Avianca announced new INSIGNIA suites with sliding doors in September 2026, with installation starting in 2027.

Can I use LifeMiles for Avianca Business Class?

Yes. LifeMiles takes transfers from Amex, Capital One, Citi, Bilt and Marriott, and Avianca is also bookable with United MileagePlus and Aeroplan as a Star Alliance member. Star Alliance award prices on LifeMiles rose in April 2026, so compare with a contracted cash fare first.
