Swiss Business Class review

Swiss A330 / A340 Business with the unique single-seat "throne" configuration in row 1, Zurich and Geneva hubs, and Star Alliance access via Aeroplan and LifeMiles. Honest comparison vs Lufthansa Allegris.

The 60-second verdict

  • Throne seats are the killer feature. Row 1 throne seats are single-seat configurations with extra space on both sides (storage console + privacy panel). The closest a non-suite Business Class product gets to a private space. Often available for free at booking when consolidator inventory exists.
  • Zurich hub efficiency. ZRH is consistently rated one of the world's most efficient connection airports. Tight connections (45 min) work reliably; Swiss First lounge is small but exceptional; Bahnhof shuttle to downtown Zurich runs every 10 minutes.
  • Strong Star Alliance award access. Swiss Business saver awards are typically findable 6-11 months out via Aeroplan, LifeMiles, and MileagePlus partner search. 70,000 miles one-way US-ZRH on Aeroplan with around $300 in fees.
  • !Cabin product is below current state-of-the-art. Swiss Business 2-2-1 / 1-2-2 layout means not every seat has direct aisle access (window seats in 1-2-2 rows need to climb over the aisle seat). The cabin is recent enough to be modern but doesn't match BA Club Suite, Qatar Qsuite, or Lufthansa Allegris.

The throne seats

Row 1 of the Swiss A330 / A340 Business cabin features unique single-seat configurations called "throne" seats. Each throne is a single Business Class seat in a row position where the adjacent seat is replaced by a large console storage table, creating extra elbow room and a quasi-private space. It's the closest Swiss Business gets to a suite-style product.

There are typically 2 thrones per aircraft (one each in rows 1 and 2 of certain configurations). Demand is high; consolidators with strong Swiss relationships can sometimes block thrones for clients at booking. If a throne is available, take it.

Throne seats are still 2-2-1 / 1-2-2 cabin format; they don't have closing doors. But the effective privacy is meaningfully higher than standard Swiss Business and competitive with non-suite Business products on other carriers.

Standard Business cabin

The standard Swiss Business cabin is 2-2-1 on the A330 and 1-2-2 on the A340, with lie-flat seats throughout. Bed length 78 inches, width 18 inches. Direct aisle access for window-1 (the 1 in 1-2-2) and center seats; window aisle seats in 2-2 rows need to step over the aisle-side seat.

The cabin design is Swiss-modern minimalist: cream and brown, simple console layout, sliding panel between window seats for privacy. Functional but not aspirational. Compare to Lufthansa Allegris (which is genuinely beautiful) or BA Club Suite (which has closing doors); Swiss is a step behind both visually.

Service is among the best in Star Alliance: precise, professional, multilingual. Swiss flight attendants consistently rate among the best-trained in Europe. Wine list emphasizes Swiss wines (which is more interesting than it sounds) plus solid Champagne and curated international selection.

Zurich hub experience

Zurich (ZRH) is one of the most efficient European hubs. The airport is compact (gate-to-gate walks are typically 10-15 minutes max), connections are reliable, and the Senator / Swiss First lounges are small but excellent. The Swiss First lounge has full a la carte dining and a separate quiet zone.

For travelers connecting onward in Europe, ZRH is faster than Frankfurt or Munich and meaningfully calmer than Heathrow or CDG. The Bahnhof shuttle to Zurich Hauptbahnhof runs every 10 minutes and takes 10 minutes; ideal for stopover travelers wanting a few hours in Zurich downtown.

Swiss First Class (separate product)

Swiss First Class on the A330 / A340 is a separate cabin (4-8 seats depending on aircraft) with closed-suite design, walk-in private compartments, and full restaurant-style dining. Bed length 80 inches, width 32 inches. Service is at Singapore Suites / Emirates First level.

Cash prices are $14,000-$17,000 round-trip US-ZRH. Aeroplan partner award is 125,000 miles one-way; ANA Mileage Club partner award is 130,000 miles one-way; LifeMiles is 145,000. The First / Business cash multiplier is roughly 2.7x; the miles multiplier is closer to 1.7x, making miles the better value for Swiss First specifically.

Frequently asked

How much does Swiss Business Class cost from the US?

Published Business Class US-ZRH typically runs $4,800 - $6,400 round-trip in shoulder season. Through a contracted consolidator, JFK or BOS-ZRH Business round-trip is regularly $2,400 - $3,000 in shoulder season. Swiss often prices 10-15% below Lufthansa on similar dates due to slightly less marketing investment.

What is a Swiss throne seat and how do I get one?

A throne seat is a single-seat configuration in row 1 of the Swiss A330 / A340 Business cabin, where the adjacent seat is replaced by a console table, creating extra space and effective privacy. There are typically 2 thrones per aircraft. To get one: book early (consolidators with strong Swiss relationships can pre-block thrones), check seat selection at the time of booking, or pay the seat-selection fee if offered. Worth the effort if available.

Is Swiss Business Class as good as Lufthansa Allegris?

Not quite. Lufthansa Allegris on the A350 is the current state-of-the-art Star Alliance Business product (1-2-1 with closing doors, multiple seat variants including Extra-Long beds). Swiss Business 2-2-1 / 1-2-2 is solid but a generation behind. Swiss wins on hub efficiency (Zurich is more efficient than Frankfurt) and on the throne seat option. For the absolute best Business hard product, take Lufthansa Allegris.

Can I use miles for Swiss First Class?

Yes. Swiss First on the A330 / A340 is one of the best mileage redemptions in Star Alliance. Aeroplan charges 125,000 miles one-way US-ZRH with $300-400 in fees. ANA Mileage Club charges 130,000 miles. The First / Business cabin multiplier is about 1.7x in miles, but cash multiplier is 2.7x, so miles are far better value for First specifically. Transfer from Amex, Chase, or Capital One.

Is Zurich a good connection hub for European business class itineraries?

Yes, one of the best in Europe. Zurich is compact (gate-to-gate walks under 15 min), the Senator / First lounges are excellent, connections work reliably even at 45-50 minute layovers. Better than Frankfurt or CDG for tight connections, comparable to Amsterdam Schiphol. The bahnhof shuttle to Zurich downtown runs every 10 minutes for travelers wanting a brief stopover.

Does Swiss have lounge access for Business Class at US arrival cities?

Swiss Business has Priority Pass + Star Alliance Gold lounge access at most US arrival airports. At JFK, the closest Star Alliance Business lounge is the Air India lounge (limited hours) or Lufthansa Senator lounge access via Star Gold status. At BOS and ORD, similar Star Alliance Gold lounges. The on-arrival experience is functional but not premium; the value is in the in-flight Business cabin and the Zurich hub itself.
