Which to pick when

Pick Qatar Qsuite when

you want a closing-door suite with the fewest caveats, you are flying from Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle or Philadelphia (Qatar flies non-stop from all seven, Etihad from none), or you plan to book with American AAdvantage miles or Avios.

Pick Qatar Qsuite when traveling together

you are a couple who wants the center double bed or a family of four who can take a Quad. Neither layout has an equivalent on Etihad.

Pick Etihad when

you are flying from New York JFK or Atlanta on Etihad's A350-1000, where the Business Studio has a sliding door, and you want to skip the immigration line on the way home. Preclearance in Abu Dhabi means you land as a domestic passenger, which helps most when you connect onward in the US.

Pick Etihad from Charlotte

Charlotte is the one US gateway Etihad serves that Qatar does not. On the routes both carriers fly, quote both: contracted fares overlap almost completely, and Etihad's band starts about $100 lower.

The seat: Qsuite is consistent, Etihad depends on the aircraft

Qatar Qsuite is a 1-2-1 private suite with a closing door and direct aisle access, about 79 inches long in bed mode. A pair of center suites converts into a double bed, and two facing center pairs can open into a four-person Quad, which makes Qsuite unusually good for couples and families. Skytrax named Qsuite the Best Business Class Seat in 2026. The caveat: Qsuite is on most but not all of Qatar's long-haul aircraft, so confirm the aircraft for your date.

Etihad's best Business Class is the Business Studio on the A350-1000: 44 seats in a 1-2-1 layout, a sliding privacy door, and a fully flat bed of about 79 inches. Reviewers rate it highly for privacy, with storage for small electronics the most common complaint. On Etihad's 2026 US schedule the A350-1000 is mainly assigned to New York JFK and Atlanta.

Most of Etihad's other US flights use the 787-9, where the Business Studio is a staggered 1-2-1 with alternating forward- and rear-facing seats and high walls but no door on most aircraft. It is a comfortable, private seat for sleeping, just not a closing suite. If a door matters to you, Qatar delivers it more consistently across its US network, and on Etihad you should confirm the aircraft before you buy.

Network and the trip home: 12 gateways vs preclearance

Qatar flies non-stop to Doha from 12 US gateways: New York JFK, Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Philadelphia, which resumed in August 2026. There is no Newark service. Etihad flies non-stop to Abu Dhabi from 6: New York JFK, Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare, Boston, Atlanta and Charlotte, which launched in March 2026. Five gateways overlap; Etihad has no West Coast or Texas service.

Etihad's structural advantage is US Preclearance. Abu Dhabi is the only Middle East hub with a US Customs and Border Protection preclearance facility, so you clear US immigration and customs before boarding and land at home as a domestic arrival, free to leave the airport or connect onward without another passport check. Build in extra time at Abu Dhabi, since the formalities happen before departure. Etihad opened a dedicated US Preclearance Lounge for Business Class passengers beside the facility at the end of 2024.

Both hubs are strong. Etihad's Business Lounge in Abu Dhabi's Terminal A opened in late 2023 across three floors, with direct boarding to select gates and 18 shower suites. Doha has two Al Mourjan Business lounges: the original in the south of the terminal and The Garden in the north, opened in 2023 at 7,390 square meters with seating for 707. Either hub makes a long connection comfortable.

Price, miles and how to book

On price the two are close. Contracted shoulder-season round-trips run $3,100-$3,800 JFK-Abu Dhabi on Etihad and $3,200-$3,800 JFK-Doha on Qatar Qsuite. These are contracted fares booked through an accredited agency, which typically sit below the published fares on airline websites. Differences by date and gateway are usually larger than the difference between the two airlines, so it pays to quote both on the same dates.

For miles, Qatar has the wider door. It is a Oneworld member, so Qsuite can be booked with American AAdvantage miles or Avios. Etihad is not in an alliance and works mainly through its own Etihad Guest program, which suits travelers already collecting it.

Whichever you choose, confirm the operating aircraft in writing: Qsuite-equipped for Qatar, and A350-1000 or 787-9 for Etihad. The aircraft decides whether you get a door, more than the airline name does.

Frequently asked

Is Etihad better than Qatar Airways?

For most US travelers, no. Qatar edges Etihad on the seat (a closing door on every Qsuite, plus double-bed and Quad options), on US reach (12 non-stop gateways vs 6) and on reputation (Skytrax 2026 World's Best Business Class, with Etihad 16th). Etihad is not a step down everywhere: its A350-1000 Business Studio has a sliding door, Abu Dhabi's US Preclearance lets you land as a domestic passenger, and its contracted fares are nearly identical.

Etihad Business Studio vs Qatar Qsuite: which is better?

Qsuite, by a modest margin. Both are 1-2-1 with direct aisle access and a bed of about 79 inches. Every Qsuite has a closing door, and center suites convert into a double bed or a four-person Quad. Etihad's A350-1000 Business Studio also has a sliding door and is close on privacy, but its 787-9 Business Studio, used on most of its other US routes, has no door on most aircraft. Skytrax named Qsuite the Best Business Class Seat in 2026.

Which flies to more US cities, Etihad or Qatar?

Qatar. It flies non-stop to Doha from 12 US gateways: JFK, Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Philadelphia. Etihad flies non-stop to Abu Dhabi from 6: JFK, Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare, Boston, Atlanta and Charlotte. Charlotte is Etihad-only; Texas, Florida, Philadelphia and the West Coast are Qatar-only. Neither flies from Newark.

Is Etihad or Qatar cheaper in Business Class?

They price almost the same. Contracted shoulder-season round-trips run $3,100-$3,800 JFK-Abu Dhabi on Etihad and $3,200-$3,800 JFK-Doha on Qatar Qsuite, so Etihad starts about $100 lower. Published Qsuite fares from JFK typically run $4,200-$5,800 off-peak and $5,400-$6,800 peak; Etihad's published JFK-Abu Dhabi fares typically run $5,400-$7,200 in shoulder season and $7,800-$9,400 peak. Quote both on your exact dates.

Does Etihad have US preclearance in Abu Dhabi?

Yes. Abu Dhabi is the only Middle East hub with US Customs and Border Protection preclearance. You clear US immigration and customs in Abu Dhabi before boarding, then arrive in the US as a domestic passenger with no further passport check, which makes onward US connections simpler. Qatar has no equivalent in Doha, so Qatar passengers clear immigration and customs on arrival in the US.

Which has better lounges, Abu Dhabi or Doha?

Both are excellent, with different strengths. Doha has two Al Mourjan Business lounges, including The Garden, opened in 2023 at 7,390 square meters with seating for 707. Etihad's Terminal A Business Lounge in Abu Dhabi, opened in late 2023, spans three floors with direct boarding to select gates and 18 shower suites, and US-bound Business passengers also get a dedicated Preclearance Lounge. Neither hub is a reason to avoid the other airline.
