you specifically want to fly the A380 Suites (book via KrisFlyer for award), you want the most polished soft product on Asia routes, or you are going to Singapore and connecting onward to Southeast Asia / Australia.
Hong Kong is your destination or connection point, you want a strong Oneworld mileage redemption (Alaska 50k US-HKG Business), or you want to experience the new Aria Suite product (1-2-1 with closing door) on the A330neo as it rolls out through 2026.
The Pier Business + First lounges at HKG are consistently ranked top 5 globally. The Aria Suite cabin (1-2-1 with closing door, rolling out on A330neo) closes the hard-product gap with Qatar Qsuite and BA Club Suite. Cathay First on the 777-300ER is also excellent and competitive with Singapore First.
Singapore Business on the A350 is a 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone lie-flat product with direct aisle access for every seat. The cabin design is conservative Singaporean modern: warm woods, gold accents, restrained luxury. Bed dimensions 78 by 22 inches.
Cathay's current Business cabin is also 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone (very similar to Singapore Business at the seat level). What changes the picture is the new Aria Suite, rolling out on Cathay's A330neo fleet through 2026: 1-2-1 with a closing door (similar to Qatar Qsuite or BA Club Suite). The Aria Suite closes the hard-product gap with the top-tier suite-style Business products.
Singapore Suites (A380 only) is the premium-cabin headline: six fully-enclosed private suites with sliding doors, separate seat and bed, Krug Champagne, and a la carte dining. This is the only Business or First product that meaningfully exceeds Qatar Qsuite. Worth booking specifically with miles where possible.
Cathay's flagship lounges at Hong Kong International (HKG) are The Pier (Business + First) and The Wing (Business + First). Designed by Ilse Crawford, the spaces emphasize natural materials, soft lighting, and quiet zones. Food is restaurant-quality with menu rotations; shower suites are large and well-appointed; the Noodle Bar serves dim sum on request.
Singapore's lounges at Changi are good but a step below. The Krisflyer Gold Business Lounge and The Private Room (First) are well-designed but smaller, less acclaimed, with more buffet-style dining vs Cathay's a la carte model.
For connection passengers especially, Cathay Hong Kong is the better hub. For destination Singapore travelers, the Changi terminal itself (Jewel, gardens, etc) is the offsetting attraction.
Singapore Airlines anchors Southeast Asia + Australia. From SIN: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Bali, Jakarta, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, plus all major SEA cities with multiple daily Business Class flights. Strong premium-cabin operation.
Cathay anchors Greater China + Northeast Asia. From HKG: Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo, Manila, plus Australia and India. Strong Pacific-Asia hub-and-spoke.
For travelers heading specifically to Singapore (city) or Sydney, Singapore Airlines wins on network. For Hong Kong city or Chinese mainland / Taipei, Cathay wins.
Singapore Suites and Singapore Business saver awards are mostly held by KrisFlyer (the airline's own program). Partner programs (Aeroplan, LifeMiles, MileagePlus) occasionally see partner-saver Singapore Business but rarely Suites. For Singapore Suites specifically, transfer Amex Membership Rewards to KrisFlyer 1:1.
Cathay opens partner-saver Business award space generously to Oneworld members. Alaska MileagePlan is the standout: 50,000 miles one-way US-HKG Business (with strict routing rules), one of the best premium-cabin redemptions globally. American AAdvantage charges 70,000 miles one-way US-HKG Business with cleaner routing.
For miles value, Cathay via Alaska MileagePlan is the cleanest win. For Singapore Suites specifically, KrisFlyer is the only realistic path.
Singapore edges Cathay on soft product (food, wine, service polish) and on the Suites flagship product. Cathay edges Singapore on the hub lounge experience (The Pier + The Wing at Hong Kong are top-tier globally), the new Aria Suite cabin (1-2-1 with closing door, A330neo rolling out 2026), and on mileage redemption value (Alaska MileagePlan at 50k US-HKG Business). Both are Skytrax top 10 and either is a great choice.
No, the two are in different alliances. Singapore is Star Alliance (redeem via KrisFlyer, Aeroplan, LifeMiles, MileagePlus). Cathay is Oneworld (redeem via Asia Miles, Alaska MileagePlan, American AAdvantage, BA Avios). The two programs don't cross-redeem.
JFK-SIN non-stop on Singapore Airlines is 18h 30m (the longest commercial flight in the world). JFK-HKG non-stop on Cathay Pacific is 15h 30m. LAX-SIN is 16h 30m; LAX-HKG is 14h 30m. Cathay is consistently 1-3 hours shorter for the comparable US gateway.
Singapore is the clear winner. Singapore Airlines has daily Business Class to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth from Singapore, with the one-stop US-SIN-AUS routing competitive on time. Cathay has Hong Kong-Sydney + Hong Kong-Melbourne but with less daily frequency and slightly older equipment. For US-Australia premium routings, Singapore via Singapore is the cleaner path.
Singapore edges Cathay narrowly. Singapore's "Book the Cook" program lets you pre-order specific dishes from a curated menu (including Singapore-style hainanese chicken rice, beef Wellington, etc.) for any flight. Cathay has chef-driven dine-on-demand with strong wine pairings (master sommelier-curated). Both serve Veuve Clicquot in Business; Singapore is more likely to also pour Krug Grande Cuvee. Quality is at the top of the industry for both.
Different products. Singapore Suites is a 6-suite cabin on the A380 with sliding doors, separate beds, and is the most-decorated First Class product in commercial aviation. Cathay First is a 6-seat cabin on the 777-300ER with closing-door suite design, exceptional dining, and very high service polish. For absolute top-tier, Singapore Suites wins. Cathay First is comparable to Emirates First A380 or ANA First "The Suite". Both are exceptional.
