US-Europe at 70,000 Aeroplan miles one-way + $250-350 in fees is the cheapest Star Alliance Business Class redemption from the US. Bookable on United Polaris, Lufthansa Allegris (the new Extra-Long bed variant included), SWISS, Austrian, Air Canada Signature, and TAP Portugal. Aeroplan does not pass through fuel surcharges on Lufthansa metal the way British Airways Avios does on BA metal, so the fees stay genuinely low.
Aeroplan transfers 1:1 from Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Miles, and Bilt Rewards. Marriott Bonvoy also transfers at 3:1. Citi ThankYou does not currently transfer to Aeroplan. The 1:1 ratio from Amex/Chase/Capital One/Bilt makes Aeroplan one of the most accessible Star Alliance currencies for US-side card holders.
Aeroplan for almost every redemption. United MileagePlus charges higher mileage (80,000-110,000 to Europe vs Aeroplan's 70,000), passes through fuel surcharges on Lufthansa metal (Aeroplan does not), and has dynamic pricing that often spikes during peak periods. Aeroplan uses a fixed award chart based on distance + region, making redemptions predictable. The exceptions: United-operated flights (use MileagePlus on those for slight savings), or when you have surplus MileagePlus and no Aeroplan.
Star Alliance saver-level Business space typically opens 11 months before departure and is most available in the 6-11 month window. Inside 30 days, saver space is hit-and-miss. For specific routes: ANA "The Room" JFK-NRT/HND has very limited saver availability and books months in advance. Lufthansa releases saver Business space 14 days before departure (last-minute window for those with flexible schedules).
Yes, but expensive. Lufthansa First Class via Aeroplan is 140,000 miles one-way US-FRA + ~$300-400 fees. Lufthansa First saver availability opens 14 days before departure (booking earlier than 14 days requires premium-level award space which costs more). Most Aeroplan members book Business (70K miles) instead and add a paid Lufthansa First Class Terminal day-pass for the lounge experience.
Aeroplan caps "fuel surcharges" on its award redemptions, even on carriers that normally pass through high YQ fees. For example, BA via Aeroplan charges ~$250-400 in fees vs British Airways Executive Club's $700+ YQ on the same flight. This makes Aeroplan dramatically cheaper than BA Executive Club for BA metal awards. The cap is one of Aeroplan's most underrated features.

If you don't have enough Aeroplan miles or the saver award space isn't available, a contracted-fare Business Class consolidator quote often beats the cash-equivalent of the redemption. US-Europe Business is regularly $2,300-$3,000 round-trip through us.
